State CIOs get SMART

The National Association of State Chief Information Officers today released a new tool that allows users to search for information technology-related resources from states across the country.

The Strategic Materials and Resources Tool (SMART) is a database that serves as a clearinghouse for articles, issue briefs, best practices, tools, presentations and other information from NASCIO members. IT issues addressed include enterprise architecture, funding models, privacy, procurement and security.

NASCIO members are the primarily the intended users for the tool, but officials can let nonmembers access information, said Chris Dixon, digital government coordinator for the association. Enterprise architecture will likely be one of those areas open to all, given NASCIO's ongoing work with the Federal Enterprise Architecture Program Management Office at the Office of Management and Budget, he said.

For now, NASCIO officials are encouraging members to submit resources and documents for the database. Over the coming months, the association plans to expand the tool to include resources from the private sector.
