Kentucky to offer free online filing

A year after the federal Free File Alliance kicked off, Kentucky has partnered with several members in order to provide free online tax preparation and filing within the state.
More than 1 million people are expected to be eligible to use the free services offered through the partnership with four of the 17 alliance companies. Every company has its own eligibility requirements, such as age, income level and military service.
The Internal Revenue Service formed the original agreement with the alliance in order to provide free online filing of 2002 federal taxes for more than 78 million citizens around the country. More than 53 million people filed their federal taxes electronically last year, with at least 2.4 million of those using the free file services.
Other states, including Georgia, have also partnered with the alliance, building on the technology, privacy and efficiency established as part of the federal program.
