Legislation backs supercomputing

The High-Performance Computing Revitalization Act of 2004 seeks to achieve U.S. dominance in the global supercomputing arena. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy is responsible for leading efforts to create an interagency road map for developing supercomputing resources.

Among the highlights of the legislation:

There must be comprehensive development of all aspects of high-performance computing, including training, product support, and software and standards development.

The National Science Foundation and the Energy Department must ensure that the U.S. research community has sustained access to supercomputing resources.

The director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy must coordinate efforts among federal agencies involved in high-performance computing.
