Giving OMB credit...

Yesterday, I chided OMB for failing to post the
Report on Competitive Sourcing Results Fiscal Year 2004 [.pdf]. But it is there now! Enjoy!

Of course, as I noted yesterday, the OMB press release [.pdf] tells people to go to OMB's Web site. But if you go to OMB's Web site, you won't find the report. You'll find the release, which is presumably where people saw the release in the first place. To find the report, one either has to go to the Results.gov Web page, where it is listed under the "What's new" section or go to the "Federal Procurement Policy" portion of OMB's Web site. It is not, however, listed under the "Reports" section of OMB's Web site.

This is the kind of stuff that seems simple, but it really isn't because it involves changing how one thinks. And, to be honest, we have had occations where we here at FCW tell readers they can find something online... but then forget to put it there... or hide it. The launch of this blog was an case in point. We announced the creation of the blogs in the magazine, but then didn't create a way to find it from the FCW.com home page. We have something up there now and we are working on a more permanent fix.

And we're in the midst of another of instance right now, in fact. In this week's issue, we trumpet the fact that we were posting former Sen. William Cohen's (R-Maine) "Computer Chaos" report online -- for the first time, no less. Well, we found out the copy of the report that we made months ago somehow was corrupted. So we posted the recommendations from the executive summary of the Chaos report online... and we'll get the full copy online very soon.

All of that in a relatively small organization. Imagine the issues facing most government agencies.

All of that being said, personally I like Web sites that have the "What's new" sections because it allows me to find that information quickly.

For what it is worth...
