Wales releases e-health plan

The United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) Wales recently released a planning document for development of an electronic health care (EHR) system in the country through 2010, with funding of $47.4 million in 2005-2006.
The Informing Healthcare planning document calls for systematically phased service improvement and infrastructure projects developed with NHS and local social care organizations.
The program would create a strategic partnering agreement with a private-sector prime contractor to develop an EHR system in Wales, but does not yet have a procurement strategy, the planning document states.
NHS Wales plans to take advantage of the NHS England's Connecting for Health project, a $20 billon program to provide EHRs to 50 million patients in England by 2010, the planning document states.
Wales will be a Connecting for Health customer as long as that program “meets with or requirements in terms of specification, delivery and affordability," according to the plan.
