Another opening at CSC

Paul Cofoni, who has led Computer Sciences Corp.'s Federal Sector for five years, has resigned. His departure will be effective Aug. 12.

CSC officials are interviewing candidates to replace him. Cofoni has not yet announced his future plans, although there is speculation that he will go to another company soon.

Mike Laphen, CSC's president and chief operating officer, will serve as acting president of the Federal Sector until Cofoni's successor is named.

Cofoni "has significantly influenced CSC's success through his positive accomplishments in several key leadership positions," said Van Honeycutt, the company's chairman and chief executive officer.

Cofoni previously served as president of CSC's Technology Management Group. Before joining the company, he worked for General Dynamics from 1974 to 1991. He was vice president of information technology services for General Dynamics' East and West Coast operations. He was an officer in the Army from 1970 to 1974.

Cofoni took over CSC's Federal Sector in 2001. During his tenure, the company had a tough time with the Internal Revenue Service's modernization project, which was plagued by delays and cost overruns.

"We paid our price in many ways," Cofoni told Federal Computer Week in a March interview. "Reputationally, financially, many of our people experienced very difficult personal hardship because of all that."

Cofoni said at the time that after studying the IRS problem, coming up with recommendations and making some personnel changes, the company improved from the experience. "The vast majority of lessons learned have been learned," he said.
