So another CIO bites the dust

Yes, Transportation Department CIO Dan Matthews became the latest CIO to join the ranks of formers... and it is a long list, as FCW reported earlier this year.

This comes on the heels of Kim Nelson's recent departure from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The little birds suggest that Matthews is leaving because of a pension issue with his former employer, Lockheed Martin -- if he wasn't there, he was going to lose it.

The money issue continues to be a challenge for agencies, and somewhat ironically, it is more pronounced for politically appointed CIOs. Certainly the turnover among CIOs makes it exceedingly difficult on a number of fronts, particularly given that many IT projects barely get started in two years.

Given that they salary issue isn't going to get 'fixed' any time soon, the question becomes how do agencies deal with this constant churt at the top ranks?
