Bates joins Ciena advisory board

Network technology company Ciena has added another experienced hand to its Government Advisory Board, which it formed in June 2005. Sandra Bates, former commissioner of the General Services Administration's Federal Technology Service, has joined it.

Bates, busy since her retirement from GSA in February 2005, is also an executive consultant at Topside Consulting.

Ciena formed the advisory board last summer, along with its Ciena Government Solutions subsidiary, to guide the company in winning government business. Other board members are:

Arthur Money, a 30-year veteran of the defense electronics industry and intelligence community, including five years as president of ESL, a subsidiary of TRW. He also served as assistant secretary of Defense for command, control, communications and intelligence from 1999 to 2001.

Kenneth Minihan, the 14th director of the National Security Agency/Central Security Service.

Larry Spilman, a former leader of AT&T's federal division and most recently leader of his own consulting firm, the Dalton Group.
