And the Webby goes to...

The winner of the Webbies have been announced -- these are the Web awards.

The winner in the government category: 72hours.org, which is from San Francisco Office of Emergency Services and Homeland Security. It is a mighty impressive site, from the little time I have spent on it.

The Webby people's choice award goes to the National Science Foundation Web site.

Here are the other government nominees.

For the news category, the Webby and people's choice award went to BBC News. In sports, EPSN.com also won the Webby and the people's choice vote.

And Thomas Friedman, the foreign affairs columnist for the New York Times and author, was named Webby Person of the Year -- probably for his influential bestseller The World Is Flat.

Snopes.com, which provides data for spotting urban legends and hoaxes, won the Webby and people's choice for in the "weird" category. If you haven't seen the site, it is well worth the time, especially when you get that note from your aunt in Burbank telling you about some FCC charge on e-mail or some strange sounding virus.
