Veterans Day... stats, museums and monuments

It is Veterans Day this weekend. Here are a ton o' veteran links including a history of the holiday and a letter from a witness of the first burial at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in November 1921. And, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 24.5 million veterans in America in 2004. Nearly 2 million of them were women. And 9.5 million were older than 65. Get more.

Also this weekend, the new National Museum of the Marine Corps opens its doors. The museum is just off I-95 in Triangle, Va. near Quantico, Va., which is the Marine Corps headquarters. The museum is really impressive. You can see it from the highway, and it just looms. Unfortunately, the site doesn't have enough photos to show it off, but here is one. Here are others. The building's architecture harks back to the Marine Corps Memorial, sometimes known as the Iwo Jima memorial.

Anyway, I can't wait to visit.

Earlier this year, they opened the Air Force Memorial, which sits overlooking the Pentagon. They do have a photo gallery. I may get there this weekend.
