Letter: Rep. Davis understands workforce woes

But it needs to be tempered with defined agency plans to use the rehired annuitants to train junior and mid-level workers, not merely to fill their old jobs at 1.7 times the pay.

In response to "Rep. Davis introduces bill to promote rehiring of retirees," Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) is one of the few members of Congress who is focused on what Congress should be doing -- e.g., looking for ways to serve the American people and not be profiling for position. His plan is a good idea, but it needs to be tempered with defined agency plans to use the rehired annuitants to train junior and mid-level workers, not merely to fill their old jobs at 1.7 times the pay. In addition, all government agencies and departments should have strong mentoring programs in place now to take advantage of the knowledge of near retirement workers.
