Work in Progress: A smart manager’s guide to data architecture (Feb. 4)

Many government executives are realizing that while good IT systems are certainly important, it is the data they collect, generate and manage that is arguably of greatest value to effective and efficient government. Yet data has traditionally been treated as a by-product of automation efforts, characterized by redundant or incompatible formats developed to serve only a single system or application. FCW contributor John Moore is going to provide a hands-on guide that managers can use to conceive, sell and execute a standard, enterprise-wide data architecture. Topics John will cover include:

  • Who works on the project and how do you create and sustain enthusiasm and support for the project?

  • Do you use a carrot or stick approach to the drive the model’s adoption?

  • How do you balance the benefits of standardization with flexibility for specialized needs?
