Former Sen. Howard Metzenbaum (D-Ohio) passed away this week. Both the and the have obituaries this morning. One of Metzenbaum's daughter's, Shelley H. Metzenbaum, is married to Steve Kelman, a Harvard professor, FCW and now also a .In addition to Shelley, the NYT reports that survivors include Metzenbaum's wife, the former Shirley Turoff; three other daughters, Barbara J. Metzenbaum of Topanga, Calif.; Susan M. Hyatt of Atherton, Calif.,  and Amy B. Metzenbaum of Mill Valley, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.I sent Steve and Shelley a note this morning offering my condolences and sympathies. Having been through , I have learned that there is no way to prepare for these kinds of things, and you rely on your family and friends for support. And it is always a good reminder that there are real people behind the people who we tend to only see on television these days. As I was reading through the obituaries, I was recalling what a firebrand Howard Metzenbaum was.Our thoughts and prayers go out to Shelley, Steve and the Metzenbaum family.Godspeed Howard.
