FCW Insider: The CIO Council hits YouTube

Perhaps we can call it CIO CouncilTube? YouTube's better be ready for some competition -- the CIO Council has its recruitment video online. (Inside joke explainer: For those of us with lives, Lonelygirl15 was something of an Internet phenomonon. She regularly posted these videos on YouTube and she was supposedly this 15-year-old girl. She would talk about her problems, but nobody seemed to know who she was. Yet she got millions of hits. Eventually it was discovered that she was, in fact, an actress. OMB's IT guru Karen Evans recently hinted that the CIO Council was going to post its recruitment video on YouTube. Well -- they've done it. I give OMB and the Council a lot of credit for posting this video on YouTube. It presents a real opportunity for it to get seen. With that on the positive side, the video seem... well, very dry. People who decide to work for the government -- and it largely is a decision that they make -- do so because they are focused on public service and on the mission. The video is heavy on business-speak. The words "transform," "drive," "diversity" and similarly dry phrases blunt the hipness a bit. Still, with the video on the Web, students searching for music videos, dogs doing funny things or dumb sports injuries might find it and be inspired to become the future of our country.
