After 10 years of generously contributing more than $2 million to The Children’s Inn at NIH, the AFCEA, Bethesda Chapter (Armed Forces, Communications and Electronics Association) has created an enduring gift that will support The Inn’s mission for decades to come.
On May 19, leaders of the AFCEA, Bethesda Chapter gathered at The Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health to officially dedicate the “AFCEA Bethesda Endowment for The Inn.” AFCEA, Bethesda Chapter leaders launched a new decade of dedication to The Inn with the announcement of an initial $450,000 endowment contribution.
“AFCEA, Bethesda Chapter is creating a living legacy of giving not only to The Inn,” said Kathy L. Russell, Chief Executive Officer of The Children’s Inn at NIH, “but to biomedical research and the treatment of pediatric diseases.”
In thanking the group, Dr. Lauren V. Wood, chair of The Children’s Inn Board of Directors, applauded their efforts in caring for The Inn’s longterm needs.
“It takes a level of leadership and courage to commit to The Inn’s future,” said Dr. Wood. “This is an inheritance for our children.”
The endowment was created to mark the 10th anniversary of the AFCEA Bethesda Chapter’s annual gala, which has raised more than $2 million since 1998. In years to come, proceeds from the annual fundraiser will be directed to this endowment, said Kenneth Touloumes, President of the AFCEA, Bethesda Chapter.
“We want to make sure that The Inn’s vital services and programs to seriously ill children and families continue well into the future,” said Touloumes, President of the Touloumes Group, based in Potomac.
The Children’s Inn at NIH is a non-profit residential “place like home” located on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md. Children and their families come from across the country and around the world to stay together in The Inn’s healing environment. Families seek medical treatment at NIH, the world’s leading biomedical research center as their last best hope for a healthy future.
Families stay at The Inn free of charge. Since The Inn opened in 1990, nearly 8,600 seriously ill children and their families have made almost 40,000 visits to The Inn.
