FCW Insider: Virtual Alabama among ACT's MOC Intergovernmental Solutions Awardees
As I mentioned, I was down at ACT's Management of Change conference earlier this week and there were a parade of awards handed out.I mentioned earlier that OMB's Karen Evans was . ACT/IAC also created a new award this year to honor Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.), who will be retiring in January.But ACT also gives out a series of Intergovernmental Solutions Awards -- and Virtual Alabama was one of the programs that they recognized. (If you haven't go on about Virtual Alabama, it only means you haven't been ... and/or you haven't been within 10 feet of me.)Virtual Alabama was the only state award winner. (They were the last award handed out at lunch on Monday. For a moment, I thought that they weren't going to win, but I was glad to see that they got recognized.)There were four other programs recognized:* Business Gateway Initiative, U.S. Small Business Administration, which is better known as , I think. * (NHLS), Department of Housing and Urban Development... I got to check this one out for a bit down at MOC. It is a very cool application that allows people to essentially check out homes on line -- again, putting data on a map. Seems so simple, doesn't it?* National Exercise Simulation Network (SIMNET), Department of Homeland Security;* Data-at-Rest Tiger Team (DARTT), Intergovernmental DAR Encryption Initiative (Federal, State, Local, and NATO) General Services Administration, and Defense Department. Five Winners Represent Innovative Solutions at Federal and State LevelsFairfax, VA – June 11, 2008 – The American Council for Technology (ACT) last night announced the winners of its 2008 Intergovernmental Solutions Awards (ISA) at the 28th annual ACT Management of Change Conference (MOC) held in Norfolk, VA. Darlene Meskell, co-chair of the 2008 ISA award program, presented the awards to the five winners.
Each year federal, state and local agencies compete for the prestigious ISA awards which are based on criteria determined for that particular year. This year, the winners represent federal and state agencies that clearly demonstrated how adopting best practicesfrom government as well as from industry-- led to measurable improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of government programs.
In addition, to earn the top distinction, the winning programs met stringent criteria which this year asked that the programs be: intergovernmental and collaborative; demonstrate technology leadership and innovation; demonstrate business transformation; have measurable impact and results; and have solutions that are available and replicable.
The four federal/civilian ISA Award winners were:
Ø Business Gateway Initiative, U.S. Small Business Administration;
Ø Data-at-Rest Tiger Team (DARTT), Intergovernmental DAR Encryption
Initiative (Federal, State, Local, and NATO) General Services Administration, and Department of Defense;
Ø National Exercise Simulation Network (SIMNET), Department of Homeland Security;
Ø National Housing Locator System (NHLS), Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The state award winner was:
Ø Virtual Alabama, State of Alabama, Alabama Department of Homeland Security
The Co-Chairs for the 2008 Intergovernmental Solutions Awards and Solutions Showcase were Darlene Meskell, Director, Intergovernmental Solutions, Office of Citizen Services and Communications, General Services Administration and Leanne Jones, Senior Director, Business Development, Abacus Technology Corporation.
“Every year we see more and more exceptional examples of how Government agencies at all levels are adopting innovative technologies in creative and beneficial ways,” said Martha Dorris, ACT President. “We’re very proud not only to showcase many of the best of these solutions, but to award our highest honor this year to these five truly outstanding programs. These award-winning solutions not only reinforce government’s role as an innovator, but also provide a platform where these agencies can share their ideas for the ultimate benefit of our citizens.”
