DOD launches Web-based system to help with moves

A new Web-based system is available to military service members to help them manage moves to new posts. The U.S. Transportation Command’s Defense Personal Property System encompasses all aspects of the military move process, the Defense Department said, adding that It lets family members, government managers and moving companies to plan, move and receive shipments.  DOD announced the system Nov. 19. The system lets service members begin planning moves by using any computer with an Internet connection, said Army Lt. Col. William Carberry, the joint program manager for the DPS system. “When our service members move to a new station it tends to be a stressful experience in their lives,” Carberry said. “What we’re trying to do with this, through automation, is try and make that a little less stressful,” The system has a tool that helps service members estimate how much their belongings weigh, and system to find a service provider to perform the move. “Our service members appreciate that because they always felt that having a go-between didn’t really improve the process,” Carberry said. “They always felt they didn’t get enough control over the move itself when they didn’t have that ability.” SRA International Inc. worked with the transportation command on the DPS program since 2004 under a $66.5 million contract, DOD said.
