Also in the News: Canadians drop border data sharing with U.S.

Canada has dropped plans to let the U.S. create a database for personal information about Canadians crossing the border, according to the Canadian TV news station CKWS.

The plan was for information collected by Canada for a new RFID-based drivers licenses to be shipped to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection service, under and agreement that the U.S. agency would use appropriate measures to protect the data.

But, after a review, Canada’s Border Services Agency decided the data would be out of its control once it was transferred, despite any agreement between the U.S. and Canada. It’s now opted instead to house the database itself at the Canadian border, CKWS said.
