Federal 100: Dr. Charles Jaffe

CEO Health Level 7
Dr. Charles Jaffe

In the three years since Jaffe joined HL7, he has broadened the influence of the organization, which develops health information technology standards. As a physician and scientist, he has worked to bridge the gap between technical standards for clinical care data and medical research data.

In 2009, Congress approved $20 billion to encourage medical providers to use electronic health records, and subsequent federal regulations specify several HL7 standards, including those for exchanging data on clinical summaries and laboratory orders.

“Under Chuck’s leadership, HL7 has evolved from a grass-roots talking shop to a globally relevant provider of enterprise health architecture and usable, business-relevant standards,” said John Speakman, associate director of clinical-trials products and programs at the National Cancer Institute's Center for Biomedical Informatics and IT.
