DISA picks new CIO and IT directors

The Defense Information Systems Agency has picked Henry Sienkiewicz as the organization’s new chief information officer, according to an announcement from DISA director Army Lt. Gen. Carroll F. Pollett. DISA made the appointment May 8 and Sienkiewicz began his new position Monday.

Previously, Sienkiewicz was technical program director for DISA’s computing services directorate. He replaces Roberta Stempfley, who is moving to the Homeland Security Department to serve as the director of DHS’ National Cyber Security Division.

Sienkiewicz is an expert in cloud computing and is an important leader in the creation of DISA’s Rapid Access Computing Environment. Launched in 2008, the virtual server provides a safe environment for secure collaboration and production, and has served as a model as cloud computing platforms have become increasingly popular over the past few years.

A retired Army veteran, Sienkiewicz told GovInfo Security that cloud computing benefits service members on the ground because of the technology’s ability to quickly identify new solutions and capabilities and quickly field them. In 2009, he said in an FCW interview that DISA’s fluency with Defense Department security requirements is a benefit to achieving fast turnaround in getting new military technologies off the ground.

DISA has also announced that Paige Atkins, former director of DISA's Defense Spectrum Organization, will replace the retiring John Garing as director of the Strategic Planning and Information Directorate, effective June 15. Garing will retire June 30.

DISA has also tapped named Daniel Bradford as principal director for Global Information Grid (GIG). His reporting date has not yet been established. Bradford replaces Richard Williams, who retired in April.
