Navy taps career cyber expert for CIO job
Terry Halvorsen, former deputy commander of cyber forces, becomes new information chief today.
The Navy named Terry Halvorsen, a career cyber security and network warfare expert, as the department's chief information officer, effective Monday.
Halvorsen previously served as deputy commander of Navy Cyber Forces in Little Creek, Va., the command responsible for the Navy's 16,000-strong information warfare, cryptology and network workforce.
Halvorsen served on active duty as an Army intelligence officer. His first assignment in 1980 was with the Army Intelligence Detachment in Pensacola, Fla., supporting that service'scryptology training with the Navy. He started his civil service career at the Pensacola cryptology school in 1985 and entered the Senior Executive Service in 2004 as the executive director of Naval Personnel Development Command.
Halvorsen replaces Robert Carey, who became the deputy CIO of the Defense Department on Oct. 25.
