GPS Jammers On The Jersey Turnpike

I ran across a slide set of a briefing last week by Jeffrey Auerbach, adviser on satellite navigation systems for the State Department at a GPS workshop in Dubai. During the briefing, he mentioned illegal signals were knocking out GPS systems at the Newark Liberty International Airport.

This stray -- and rather astounding bit of information -- from the other side of the planet led me to do some Google digging, which led to an FAA newsletter from November which detailed the GPS signal interference problem at the Newark airport.

The New Jersey Turnpike runs next to the airport and the FAA reported that the GPS signals at the airport were being knocked out by illegal GPS jammers in cars traversing the Turnpike.

Now, we all know the Turnpike is the Highway from Hell, but I can't figure out any reason why a car needs a GPS jammer on that road.
