Federal 100: Joseph F. Klimavicz
Joseph F. Klimavicz
CIO and Director of High Performance Computing and Communications
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Commerce Department
Joseph Klimavicz has a passion for making the most efficient and effective IT tools available to NOAA scientists so they can provide the best science and services to government customers.
He was a government leader during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and quickly got the scientific community to agree to use GeoPlatform.gov as the official federal source for map-based data regarding the spill. After that initial step, he opened the website to the public less than two weeks after the hardware and software were commissioned.
Klimavicz also continued his efforts to push his organization to meet the aggressive milestones of NOAA’s IT strategic plan, create partnerships with other federal agencies and increase NOAA scientists’ access to high-performance computing resources.
