Twitter to roll out its own link shortener

Twitter announced it will soon introduce its own URL shortener, which will work automatically on its popular social media website.

Each Twitter message has a limit of 140 characters, so short URLs are popular and are offered by providers that include TinyURL.com and bit.ly.

Twitter has introduced its new automatic link shortener to a small number of users and is preparing to roll it out for everyone.

Twitter announced in a blog entry on June 7 that it was preparing to debut its new automatic link shortener that would instantly shorten all Web addresses to no more than 19 characters.

The General Services Administration also offers its own URL shortener service for government employees only at Go.USA.gov.

Twitter provided simple instructions on its blog for how to operate the new link reducer:

“Just paste a link of any length into the Tweet box on Twitter.com. After you’ve composed your Tweet and you hit the 'Tweet' button, we’ll shorten the link so that it only takes up 19 characters,” the blog stated.
