An analysis of the roughly 1,800 top-level federal Web domains shows that nearly a quarter of them can't be reached, Nextgov reports.

In some cases, that could mean sites have been shut down or their content consolidated into larger sites, said Benjamin Balter, the new media fellow at the Federal Communications Commission who designed the analysis tool as a personal project.

In the article, Balter cautioned that the analysis tool hasn't been thoroughly tested and the results shouldn't be considered 100 percent accurate. In addition, sites might have been temporarily off-line during Balter's search, the article states.
