Navy Expects to Save $1.4 Billion From Data Center Consolidation by 2017

That's the goal of Navy Chief Information Officer Terry Halvorsen who said in a blog post last week the Navy and Marine Corps need to cut back on the number of data centers they operate in order to cut their overall information technology budgets by 25 percent.
"Reducing the IT budget by 25 percent won't be easy," Halvorsen said "One of the things we will do in the department is to look at what are the best operating data centers in terms of mission sustainment, cost of operations and security, and those are the data centers that we will move stuff into."
The Navy and Marines operate 150 data centers and the goal is to shut down and consolidate as many as possible by 2017 to meet the savings goals, the blog post said.
