Federal 100: Capt. Martin M. Minnich
Capt. Martin M. Minnich
Communications Officer
Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan
U.S. Marine Corps
The work: Rebuilding an advanced communications system in just six hours to support relief efforts after the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last year.
The impact: The network made it possible for base commanders to fully manage the dissemination of information and emergency response in the first critical days of the disaster.
The nuts and bolts: Just a week before the earthquake, Minnich had finished updating and expanding the base’s infrastructure using computer equipment retrofitted from Iraq and southwest Asia. Those upgrades, done on a very tight budget, proved to be invaluable to the disaster response efforts.
