Federal 100: Charles C. Hume
Charles C. Hume
Deputy Chief Officer, Health Systems
Veterans Health Administration
Veterans Affairs Department
The work: Developing interagency processes for managing the expansion of an integrated electronic health record program.
The impact: The Joint Interoperability Ventures program is expected to provide a model for improved collaboration between the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs on IT projects.
The nuts and bolts: The program made it possible to transfer radiological images and reports between the Naval Station Great Lakes and the North Chicago VA Medical Center, eliminating the need for redundant tests and enhancing quality of care. Hume also championed the use of a common portal so that federal health care center patients do not need to register with both DOD and VA.
