The work: Championing the development of a secure, cloud-based infrastructure for sharing medical data and improving care for veterans.

The impact: VA clinicians can now access patient records and information on medications and lab results at patients’ bedsides using tablet PCs.

The nuts and bolts: De Sanno acted aggressively to create a secure foundation for mobile apps at VA. His work also led to development of a pilot program in which severely ill veterans use VA-issued iPads to manage their care and interact with doctors, thereby increasing communication while minimizing the need for patients to travel to medical centers.
