Federal 100: W. Scott Gould

W. Scott Gould
Deputy Secretary
Veterans Affairs Department

The work: Providing vision and focus for the department's efforts to eliminate a backlog in disability claims, provide educational benefits, find jobs and end homelessness among veterans.

The impact: Gould oversees 16 transformational initiatives at VA, including the Post 9/11 GI Bill, which is the biggest investment in veterans’ education since World War II.

The nuts and bolts: Gould is in charge of keeping the third largest federal employer operating around the clock — providing medical care, administering other benefits and overseeing cemetery services for veterans — while carrying out fundamental improvements at VA, mostly through changes in technology and business processes.
