Wanted: Developers to quickly create virtual landscapes for missile tests
Graphical rendering of real-world terrain is time consuming and expensive.
The Army is enlisting graphic developers to come up with faster ways to recreate the terrain of real-world locations for drone and missile simulations.
The goal is to cut the time needed to populate flight simulation landscapes with trees, bushes, roads and buildings down to “a week or less,” according to a solicitation.
This rendering has typically sucked up extensive time and labor because the service has relied on mostly manual approaches to build virtual landscapes that bear accurate resemblance to the real world, the document says. “There is need for an innovative approach to automating or semi-automating the processes,” according to the solicitation.
The solicitation officially launches May 24. Proposals are due June 27.
