State CIOs aim to consolidate data centers, move to the cloud

Consolidating data centers and other infrastructure, moving more operations to nimble computer clouds and avoiding a cyberattack or other security breach are the top three priorities for state chief information officers in 2013, according to a survey released Tuesday.

Members of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers also are focused on responding to tighter budgets and the state requirements from the 2010 Affordable Care Act, the survey said.

The state priorities largely mirror federal technology priorities, though most state budgets will likely require more drastic technology spending cuts than the federal budget.

“The top priorities reflect the fact that state governments are under continued pressure to do more with less and that leads to innovation, collaboration and sharing,” NASCIO President and Nebraska Chief Information Officer Brenda Decker said in a statement.

Other items on state CIOs’ priority lists include making more employee and citizen services available through mobile devices and improving shared services among state agencies, the survey said.
