VanRoekel to Temporarily Lead OMB Management Team

Federal Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel will temporarily lead the White House Office of Management and Budget’s management team, an OMB spokeswoman said Tuesday.

OMB Director Sylvia Burwell asked VanRoekel to lead the management team on an interim basis until a new deputy director for management is confirmed, spokeswoman Ari Isaacman Astles said.

Last week President Obama tapped the previous deputy director, Danny Werfel, to temporarily lead the embattled Internal Revenue Service.

“During this period, [VanRoekel] will remain the U.S. CIO and administrator of the office of e-government and information technology,” Astles said. “Deputy Controller Norman Dong will lead OMB’s Office of Federal Financial Management in Danny Werfel’s absence.”

Federal News Radio first reported the leadership shift.

VanRoekel has been CIO since August 2011 where he’s launched numerous initiatives including a federal digital strategy and a shared services strategy. Before taking on the CIO role he was managing director of the Federal Communications Commission and an executive at Microsoft.
