The Air Force has shut down its high frequency research transmitters.
The Air Force has shut down its controversial High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program site in Gakona, Alaska, long viewed by conspiracy theorists as the source of mind control and weather modification experiments.
HAARP pumps radio waves into the ionosphere through an array of 180 antennas. The Air Force says HAARP is used to conduct experimental research on high-power radio wave interactions in the ionosphere and space, as well as in related military-system applications.
The Amateur Radio Relay League first reported the shutdown of HAARP, which is managed by the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles Directorate at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., and the Office of Naval Research in Arlington, Va.
James Keeney, HAARP program manager at Kirtland, told ARRL that the facility was shut down due to lack of funds. “It comes down to money. We don’t have any,” Keeney said.
The Alaska Dispatch reported yesterday that HAARP was shut down in May and could come back on line this fall when the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency turns it back on to support ionosphere research, for which it has a “sizeable funding block.”
