GovTV: Would you fly a solar-powered plane at night?

Solar Impulse is the first plane ever with the ability to use solar energy to fly both day and night without using fuel. Earlier this month, Solar Impulse completed a coast-to-coast trip from San Francisco to New York, making stops in three other cities. The video captures the plane's pit stop in Washington, D.C., where Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz hailed the plane as an "engineering marvel."

The plane uses a variety of clean fuel alternatives, including high-performance solar cells on its wings and lithium-polymer batteries that store energy for night-time flying.

"After the industrial revolution and IT revolution, I think we have the clean technology revolution," said Bertrand Piccard, initiator and president of the Solar Impulse Project, which is housed in Switzerland.
