Defense IG Slaps Washington Headquarters Services for Poorly Managing Task Order

The Washington Headquarters Services, which manages and provides support service for the Pentagon and other Defense Department installations in the Washington, D.C., area including information technology, spent $2.4 million more than expected and potentially wasted $271,358 on one IT task order, DOD inspector general reported Wednesday.

WHS has 10 IT task order contracts – in which vendors respond to requirements from DOD customers – valued at $163.1 million. The IG said WHS did not properly solicit, award or manage nine of them, valued at $155.1 million.

The IG did not identify what task was covered by the one task order that potentially wasted $271,358.

In their response to the IG, WHS officials said the report does not take into account thousands of task orders it has properly administered and reflects a “jaundiced view” on the part of the IG.
