Gauging emerging tech's effect on federal agencies

Why: Technologies such as cloud, virtualization and wireless networks are opening the door for agencies to gradually bring in new technologies that could save money and maximize efficiency of IT resources.

Deltek identified several tech sectors that could transform federal IT environments, including sensor technologies, software-defined infrastructure, IPv6 and predictive analytics/machine learning.

Sensor technologies can be used with data analytics, and are also used to track facility energy consumption and enhance physical security, Deltek said.

Leveraging the Internet of Things and sensor technology more extensively would require focused spending on network infrastructure, standardizing protocols on IP-based technologies, cybersecurity and advanced analytics to manage the data.

Deltek also said that the inclusion of predictive analytics as an offering on GSA's Alliant II government-wide contract -- and potentially on NS2020 -- should help the field become more of a standardized commercial-off-the-shelf solution.
