Video: How Tracking Technology and Deep Data Are Transforming Football
Can big data help you win the Super Bowl?
Big data is coming to the NFL. Football teams have found a new way to quantify player performance, even at the granular level, thanks to Zebra Technologies.
This data comes from RFID chips embedded into the players' uniforms -- specifically their shoulder pads.
Meanwhile, receivers placed around the stadium track the data coming from the chips about 25 times per second. The result is incredibly detailed data on a player's speed, precision and other important aspects of his performance.
This level of data collection analysis may only be the beginning for football.
"I think what happens in years to come where there's new technology, things that haven't been invented, is this bringing together of video, real-time player-tracking and virtual reality," said Jill Stelfox of Zebra Technologies.
