Supercomputing for cancer research. When Stahlberg’s sister was undergoing treatment for cancer, he realized there was a gap between what is happening in cancer research and what is available at medical facilities. As director of high-performance computing at the Leidos-operated Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, Stahlberg seized the opportunity to combine the lab’s and the National Cancer Institute’s research with the computing power of the Energy Department. The new partnership has already led to three pilot programs that bring together scientists from multiple agencies with the goal of advancing cancer research and speeding new treatments into clinical practice.
