Defining data protection. Under Desai’s guidance, FERC became one of the first agencies to develop an information protection policy, which now helps the commission secure 2 petabytes of data. Desai also leads FERC’s Information Governance initiative, which evaluates the sensitivity of data and creates policies for labeling, storing, sharing and protecting it. The initiative worked so well that it's now being used as a model for providing guidance to other agencies. In addition, Desai is helping to groom the next crop of federal IT workers through leadership roles in the Young AFCEANs and ACT-IAC’s Voyagers Program.
