*** The Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee will hear from John Gibbs, the nominee to lead the Office of Personnel Management in a Sept. 9 confirmation hearing. Gibbs currently serves as acting assistant secretary for community planning and development at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. President Donald Trump nominated Gibbs in July to take over for Dale Cabaniss, who quit in March amid reports of turmoil between OPM and the White House personnel office. Gibbs' nomination generated controversy because of his past as a conservative commentator with a penchant for conspiracy theories. A CNN report from March 2018 detailed Gibbs's history of controversial Twitter posts, including the claim that Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman took part in satanic rituals.
