The Navy: Now in 3D. Parker oversaw the command’s HACKtheMACHINE competition to bring in outside technologists to develop new and innovative ideas related to data science and 3D printing. Under his guidance, the contest identified three distinct cyber vulnerabilities in maritime electronic systems and weaknesses in products made by 3D print manufacturers. Participants also developed new ways to scan and share maintenance data on the Navy’s F/A-18 jet. The competition’s additive manufacturing track was a first for the Navy and could eventually enable sailors at sea to document a damaged component, send the information to designers and get a blueprint for printing a replacement part.
