5G for the warfighter. During his decade-long tenure as Air Force CTO, Konieczny has steered the service’s adoption of any number of emerging technologies. But in his final year of government service — he retired in January 2021 — 5G was front and center. From security considerations to a sharing/coexistence system prototype that enables dynamic spectrum sharing between commercial 5G providers and high-power military radars, Konieczny drove the Air Force’s 5G efforts. The result is an IT foundation that will power augmented reality training for airmen, improve telemedicine in the field, and support next-generation command and control communications.
