Labor Department seeks leader for digital transformation

The Department of Labor is looking for a director of digital transformation to lead a new directorate focused on improving technology products and driving customer experience gains.

The Labor Department isn’t the only agency with a focus on customer experience lately. The Biden administration made service delivery improvements a goal last winter with the release of an executive order focused on customer experience.

The Labor Department's new directorate will be based in the Office of the Chief Information Officer and ensure that the executive order on customer experience is carried out, “especially with regard to how IT systems are designed and implemented,” the department’s deputy CIO Rick Kryger told FCW in a statement.

“The Digital Transformation Office will use technology to meet the goal of modernizing Government and implementing services that are simple to use, accessible, equitable, protective, transparent, and responsive for all people of the United States,” the position listing states of the new office.

The new office isn't budgeted for staff other than the director, but there are plans to relocate existing department workers, a department spokesperson told FCW.

Applications for the new director position are closing on Thursday.

Kryger said that one “significant focus” of whoever gets the job will be making sure that there are “measurable improvement in customer satisfaction and useability” of the department’s public-facing systems and those that’ve been designated as “high-impact,” a categorization putting them under certain reporting measurements.

Another focus will be “leveraging standardized approaches in the design and operation of public-facing systems,” he said.

Other duties included in the job listing include leading the assessment of Labor Department services to find which are ripe for transformation and helping coordinate department-level Technology Modernization Fund initiatives.

The director will also have to work outside the department boundaries as the Labor Department’s representative on interagency working groups for service delivery or customer experience. 

The job listing also has a section on the new director partnering with agency programs that “rely on federal partnerships” and says that the new hire might be in the business of giving “direct IT digital transformation support” to states. 

The salary range for the position, which is in the senior executive service, is $135,468 to $203,700.
