DOD OKs 23 Cloud Solutions for Least Sensitive Data
DISA formalized its strategic decision, granting provisional authorizations to 23 cloud service offerings up to Impact Level 2.
Back in November, the Defense Department tweaked its cloud computing strategy to make it easier for cloud service providers to host its least sensitive data.
The move simplified the game for cloud service providers, allowing those that had met cloud security requirements under the Federal Risk and Management Authorization program to be eligible to compete to store DOD’s least sensitive data without jumping through additional hoops.
According to a press statement released today, the Defense Information Systems Agency formalized its strategic decision, granting provisional authorizations to 23 cloud service offerings up to Impact Level 2.
Impact Level 2 is the least sensitive data DOD hosts based on risk and criticality, and includes publicly available website data and some private unclassified information. These 23 cloud service offerings can now compete for business within DOD at Impact Level 2.
There are four impact levels -- 2, 4, 5 and 6 -- with each successive level mandating additional security requirements. Level 6 data, for example, is classified information.
"The granting of these provisional authorizations is an important step in our strategy to drive cost down by moving more of our mission data to the cloud," said Terry Halvorsen, DOD chief information officer, in a statement.
