The FBI Just Got 'Hyperconverged' for $28 Million

The Justice Department has shelled out $28 million to outfit the FBI with a new unclassified virtual desktop infrastructure that’ll support 55,000 users on more than 600 Dell XC series appliances.

In a press release, Dell officials said Nutanix software on its hardware would provide the FBI with “hyperconverged systems that combine compute, storage and virtualization resources” that will soon allow users – from field agents to administrators – to securely access unclassified data and applications from any device.

Dell said it will be one of the largest virtual desktop deployments in the federal government and should slash DOJ’s IT spend through lower ownership costs and a reduced energy footprint.

Importantly, hyperconverged IT systems scale out – in this case, incrementally – to meet needs, almost akin to a plug-and-play approach for servers.
