An army of robots is behind that Amazon Prime shipment.

As Christmas looms nearer, orders are pouring into Amazon.com with the hope they'll arrive by the Dec. 25 deadline. How does Amazon get all those orders fulfilled and delivered? Robots and a little elbow grease.

At the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Tracy, California, Kiva robots roam the floor carrying stacked shelves of goods 10 feet high. Human pickers grab items from the robots and then place them on conveyor belts that take ordered items to where they need to go.

"There's tens of miles of conveyance that's always running around the clock ready to make sure we get the product to the customer on time," said Kelvin Downes, the general manager at the fulfillment center.

In select cities, this entire shipment process takes just one hour, but the world's largest retailer is hoping to cut that time down even further with drones.
