Robot Delivery: A New Way to Order Takeout
No tip required.
Feeling hungry, but don't want to cook or leave the house?
DoorDash, an on-demand food delivery service has recently deployed the Starship delivery robot. It can mount curbs with its six wheels, and it boasts nine cameras and ultrasonic sensors to navigate its city surroundings at 4 mph.
When a customer places an order through DoorDash, the robot springs to life and goes to the restaurant. A human employee places the food—from pizza to burritos to salads—in the robot's storage hatch and it goes on its way.
The robot will send users a text message letting them know it's on its way. To get their food, users must press a button on the DoorDash app to unlock the storage compartment.
Thankfully, the little robot is able to cross roads safely and has a number of anti-theft measures, including emergency alarms.
