Recovery.gov Maps Go Deeper

Recovery.gov on Thursday retooled the maps on its Web site, as the official stimulus-monitoring portal prepares for a more thorough refresh later this summer.

While agencies are not required to begin transmitting spending reports until October, they are beginning to report their weekly state-by-state distributions of money, according to Vice President Joseph Biden, who announced the upgrade.

"The new interactive maps now available on Recovery.gov showing how Recovery dollars are moving to states, contractors, grantees and other recipients are an important next step in making a historic amount of information available to the public," he said in a statement.

On one of two new maps, users can direct their cursors over each state to display dollar amounts that include a) what federal agencies publicized they would give to the state; b) what the agencies currently have made available for projects; and c) the amount the agencies have paid out to the state. The map is expected to be updated weekly

On the other map, clickable orange dots indicate to users the locations of projects funded by the Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The dots display the name of the company that received stimulus money, a project description, the amount of money allocated for the project, and its geographic location. The map will be updated as new data is submitted.
