More Recovery Funds for Airport Security

The Homeland Security Department will infuse airports with $35.4 million in recovery funds to enhance security, bringing the total amount of recovery dollars dedicated to screening and explosives detection technology to $1 billion.

According to an announcement released from DHS today, $30 million will be spent on reduced-size Explosive Detection Systems (EDS) that screen checked baggage in areas with limited space, $4.1 million will be spent on a new closed circuit television system with surveillance capabilities at Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport, and $1.3 million will be spent for the design of an explosive detection baggage handling system at an off-site facility at Orlando International Airport.

More than $3 billion has filtered to homeland security projects from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act , signed into law in Feb. Included in that total is $700 million for screening checked baggage and $300 million for checkpoint explosives detection technology, according to DHS.
